Jack Daniels is the cure to all evils.
Sex should be casual and, preferably, anonymous.
Giving a damn is for nurses, philanthropists and suicide hotlines.
My name is Mathew Rogers and those are the values I built my adult life around. They are also the reason I had to forsake everything I loved in Seattle and embark on a solitary road trip across the country, with no direction other than searching for the next small town, the next girl, and the closest liquor store.
Boredom, frustration and a series of unfortunate decisions led me to the rickety-ass town of Jolene, Alabama—a town I wanted to leave behind from the moment I passed the welcome sign. But it was there where I met her. The girl who made me question everything I’ve always believed in, and the only one who has ever had the power to break my heart.
Her name is Lexie.
She’s beautiful, and I’m pretty sure she hates me.
And for once in my life, I give enough of a damn that I keep finding a reason to stay.
What to drink (or eat) while reading The Reason I Stay
Grease, chocolate and booze, those are the menu highlights for The Reason I Stay. So, if you don’t mind extra calories or feeling a little buzzed, put on your sun glasses, get a beach chair and enjoy your weekend eating and drinking with Matt and Lexie.
To start your day on the right foot take a cue from Lexie and add some chocolaty happiness to your morning. A stack of fluffy chocolate chip pancakes topped with strawberries and drizzled with syrup is key to ensuring that any day will be a happy one. For some extra yummy fuel, you can add a side of eggs and a large cup of strong coffee to the mix—in the case of a hangover you can add some Jack Daniels to it—it’ll definitely keep you running and motivated, even if you run into a jerk halfway through your day.
The Jukebox Diner is the preferred destination for lunch and dinner in Jolene, Alabama. On the menu you’ll find plenty of mouthwatering options that will leave you satisfied—and maybe with a minor case of heartburn. Chicken fried steak with white gravy, collard greens, fried okra, and fish fry are amongst the most popular options and work well when paired with a pitcher of sweet tea. Burgers, spicy fries and buffalo wings are also big hits, especially during the evening. And when paired with a cold beer, it constitutes Matt’s favorite dinner.
A good suggestion for the most romantic chapters is to get a blanket and sit under the moon and stars with your book, a sandwich, brownie squares and some wine. It may seem like an odd combination, but if you give it a try, you’ll see that it works like magic. And if the feels get too much and you need to relax a bit, take Matt’s suggestion: boiled peanuts and Jack Daniels with absolutely no moderation.
If you follow this menu, I’m sure that by the end of the book you’ll be a little drunk and maybe slightly bloated, but I guarantee you’ll be satisfied and with a huge smile on your lips.
