What if your destiny lay on the other side of death? The annual Culling ceremony is a day every coming-of-age novice looks forward to within the Primeval Coven. It's the start to being initiated into the Night Watchmen, humankind's protectors, and it's the long-awaited day when novices discover if they're a Hunter or a Witch. But this day is not a happy one for Faye Middleton. Not when she's known her whole life that she's a Defect and is about to face banishment in front of her fellow novices. She's forced to attend the Culling with little hope for her future, but what she discovers about herself is far worse than she could've imagined. And far more dangerous. Thrown into training and separated from her friends, Faye must learn to adjust. She struggles to find her place within the Coven, and with Jaxen Gramm, the darkly handsome and extremely unnerving man assigned to watch and protect her. Emotions run high, and when she discovers a deadly secret about him, her struggles deepen. As corruption within the Coven begins to unravel, Faye pieces together her role in saving the future of her people, and within Jaxen's life...but will the truth save her, or be her undoing?

My Thoughts

Poor Faye! I mean this girl goes from believing that she is a complete dud to finding out she’s THE Everlasting. The Everlasting is a myth about someone that can do what no others can, someone that is both a hunter and a witch, and that person’s power is supposed to be surpassed by none.

What I loved about this is that Faye is pretty down to earth with all of this. She’s overwhelmed but she’s tough and stubborn as hell! And really, she needs to be because once word gets out about her being the “one” she’s going to be coveted by everyone. The explanations were really easy to understand even though this world is completely different and very paranormal. I found myself easily able to feel a huge amount of empathy for Faye. Sadly, I don’t think anyone else in this book does! There are quite a few people that just do not give her any credit at all and those that are actually giving her credit pretty much just throw her to the wolves (quite literally).

For the most part I really enjoyed most of the characters. There were some like Katie, that I just wanted to smack. I get that it’s explained why Katie reacts the way she does in certain events but I just felt like saying “GET OVER YOURSELF” but even as I am wanting to scream at Katie I have to admit that I would also have to scream at Faye because she has some narcissistic moments too. Of course she is forgiven because damn, this girl is going through some crap!

So, first we have this culling thing. Then we have parents missing. Then we have everyone trying to get to Faye. AND THEN we have a love triangle…. Sorta.

My goodness… that’s a lot for one book! I don’t know how she does it but somehow it mostly works. Jax good sideI got frustrated with the love triangle a few times though. I really like Jaxen (and no it doesn’t have anything to do with the fact that my pup is also named Jax!!) but man… this was almost overwhelming. I feel guilt about them and then I am screaming for them to just go for it. No wonder Faye has issues!

In short: I devoured this book. It was fantastic and I love the paranormal aspect. Ends on a total cliff hanger so be ready for that. It’s worth it though!

This sounds like a fun read and I very action packed too! I don’t mine love triangles when they’re done well, but i’m glad you still enjoyed it despite that and the Katie thing. Great review! 🙂
