Fifteen year-old Cait Weerd has no idea she's being sought by the undain: sorcerous creatures that feed off the spirit of the living. She doesn't know they need her blood to survive. She doesn't even know she's a witch, descended from a long line of witches. Cait Weerd doesn't know a lot, really, but all that's about to change.
At Manchester Central Library she's caught up in sudden violence. In the chaos she's given an old book that's been hidden there. Given it and told to run. Hide the book or destroy it. The book contains all the secrets of the undains' existence. They and their human servants want to find it as much as they want to find her.
Cait learns the fates of two worlds are at stake. Just what she needs. Along with definitely-not-a-boyfriend Danny, she has to decide what the hell to do. Run, fight or hope it all goes away.
It's only then she learns who she really is, along with the terrible truth of what the undain have been doing in our world all this time...
This was yet another interesting tale about witches and I loved the beginning, the library and what lies underneath and the secrets surrounding Cait, and the introduction of Nox.
She opened her hand to reveal a large furry spider, bright purple bands on its legs and body. She held it close to Ariane’s hair and the spider stepped across, feeling its way with its long legs, nestling into its new home.
Can we say? YAY for spiders? I love them!!
I did love the characters once I was able to get everything back in order I felt much better. I did love Simon’s use of description and the way he is able to write is almost poetic in a way and even while I was lost that is what kept me going. Cait was just amazing. And her grandmother is a spitfire! But this book made me question who I should believe even while wanting to trust.
There’s the difference between the magic we work and the magic of the undain. Magic should never be used lightly. It is a wonderful and terrible gift.
What I really enjoyed were the bits about Nox. For some reason I just really like him for some reason! I love when the bad guys are awesome and with his fabulous introduction and just the way he carries himself, there has to be more to know about this guy!
So, all in all, very interesting story. Maybe it didn’t hit me right at the beginning because there is a small time shift but I’m sure this will be a paranormal lover’s dream. The characters and the way Simon writes definitely add to the story!
He writes science fiction and fantasy as well as some stories that can’t make their minds up.
