Married for nearly 38 years, author Deborah DeArmond and her husband have made the spoken declaration, “I choose you today” a regular part of their communication. It’s when we least feel like saying it that we need to remind ourselves that love is a choice, not a feeling. I Choose You Today features 31 scriptural principles that support marriage and help couples develop healthy biblically based behavior. Built on an introductory anecdotal story, each chapter has an inspirational takeaway of not only what to do, but how to begin applying the principles immediately. Thought provoking questions create talking points for couples to explore their own choices and experiences in each area serve to generate open dialogue of discovery. I Choose You Today is not a book of
I remember my sister’s wedding quite a few years ago. I wrote a speech that was nearly intelligible through all my tears, but I told her and her new husband that I wanted them to chose daily to be together and to remember why they were there on that beautiful day. To choose to be with someone every day is a powerful statement. This book says exactly that.
So, there are two things with this one. I really think it will be absolutely fantastic for anyone that is religious. Me, being the not so religious type didn’t love the portions about the bible, which normally I would skim over. In this case there were entire chapters based on what the bible has taught us to believe and what God says. Like I said, fantastic if you are religious, not so much if you are not.
That being said, some of the religious portions do have a great deal of really good information. And I do believe in God just not in the conventional way, so I was able to see how this could help any couple, even if you are not in relationship trouble.
Proverbs 18:21 “death and life are in the power of the tongue”
And that is the point. You want to read stuff like this before you NEED it.
What I absolutely love is that there are so many real world techniques that can be put into place immediately. Like sending emails or text to your husband or wife while they are at work or away. Or flirting with each other! I thoroughly enjoyed reading the chapter on intimacy and honestly. There were also chapters and choosing to listen, laugh, and living with that person.
The writing was wonderful and down to earth and the examples seemed all real world based. Things that I could immediately apply to my life.
In short this is a book that I think every couple can read, and especially together! If you are not religious just skim those parts but don’t skip some of them have some serious lessons!
