Perfect for fans of Alice Clayton and Emma Chase, Lauren Layne’s Oxford series heats up in this story of forbidden desire as a brooding jock hoping for a comeback falls for a woman who’s strictly off-limits.
A year ago, Jackson Burke was married to the love of his life and playing quarterback for the Texas Redhawks. Now he’s retired, courtesy of the car accident that ruined his career—and single, after a nasty scandal torpedoed his marriage. Just as he’s starting to get used to his new life as a health and fitness columnist for Oxford magazine, his unpredictable ex shows up on his doorstep in Manhattan. Jackson should be thrilled. But he can’t stop thinking about the one person who’s always been there for him, the one girl he could never have: her younger sister.
Mollie Carrington can’t say no to Madison. After all, her older sister practically raised her. So when Madison begs for help in winning her ex-husband back, Mollie’s just glad she got over her own crush on Jackson ages ago—or so she thought. Because as Mollie reconnects with Jackson, she quickly forgets all her reasons to stay loyal to her sister. Tempted by Jackson’s mellow drawl and cowboy good looks, Mollie is sick and tired of coming in second place. But she can’t win if she doesn’t play the game.

My thoughts

I nearly did not get this through Netgalley because of the title. I did not want to read about a dramatic story about a girl or guy pawning over their unrequited love. After reading the synopsis, and during a much needed break from apocalyptic stories, I decided to pick this up.

The synopsis is fabulous and does not give much away. Nor does the cover. Unlike many romance stories out there the cover only shows Jackson Burke. The story starts with him and Mollie and they are having a normal conversation. She feels like she is too nerdy and much too introverted to go and dance. He leans down and kisses her cheek. It is immediately obvious there is no LOVE there, but there is a connection. They are friends and being that there is an age difference, I was curious how this was going to work out. The age difference was definitely not the only thing standing in Mollie’s way… her sister and Jackson’s ex-wife!

That was the first chapter. The beginning was SO good that I just could not put the book down. I devoured the 260 pages while freaking out a little because these two do have a drama filled life. A little like I was worried about but also, so SO much worse than what I could have imagined.

Madison is the only character that I do not like. It is not like she is a villain that is set up to be a mean girl and ruin everyone’s lives. She really is a narcissistic (insert expletives here) and goes out of her way to make everyone around her feel guilty because she is just OH SO sweet. Ugh… I wanted to shoot her! Really though, she brings a different kind of drama than what I was imagining. Which was good, and bad. She is a villain!

The plot between Mollie and Jackson is phenomenal. I loved every single minute. I went into this with quite a few worries but I left wanting to read more of Lauren Layne!
