At a school where Quantum Paradox 101 is a required course and history field trips are literal, sixteen year-old time traveler Bree Bennis excels…at screwing up.After Bree botches a solo midterm to the 21st century by accidentally taking a boy hostage (a teensy snafu), she stands to lose her scholarship. But when Bree sneaks back to talk the kid into keeping his yap shut, she doesn’t go back far enough. The boy, Finn, now three years older and hot as a solar flare, is convinced he’s in love with Bree, or rather, a future version of her that doesn’t think he’s a complete pain in the arse. To make matters worse, she inadvertently transports him back to the 23rd century with her. Once home, Bree discovers that a recent rash of accidents at her school are anything but accidental. Someone is attacking time travelers. As Bree and her temporal tagalong uncover seemingly unconnected clues—a broken bracelet, a missing data file, the art heist of the millennium—that lead to the person responsible, she alone has the knowledge to piece the puzzle together. Knowledge only one other person has. Her future self. But when those closest to her become the next victims, Bree realizes the attacker is willing to do anything to stop her. In the past, present, or future.
I absolutely love time travel stories! The science fiction behind this started scaring me a little but it was never so heavy that I felt out of my comfy zone. Time Travel in itself is very sci fi but it’s just so much fun to read about when done right, and this was done fabulously! There’s a bit of a paradox that we all think about when reading time travel books and I love that the characters were actually concerned and there are rules to ensure that no paradoxes ensue.
If you do love sci fi don’t take my enjoying this as a sign that you may not! This does have quite a bit of sci fi jargon and descriptions, quite a bit in fact, but the way Karen Akins describes the sciencey parts is just marvelous.
Loved the characters. At first I was not sure I was going to trust anyone but Bree but as the story progresses I found myself really enjoying most of the characters. The first travel stint that Bree is in at the beginning of the story sets a great stage for some dramatics but not the kind that do not drive the story. During each intense part I felt as if something really important was going on and I did not want to stop reading for fear that I would miss an important part.
And then there is Finn. He is just so cute! I love how they meet and what happens when they see each other again. Their relationship is by far NOT an easy one and is fraught with frustration and anxiety (due to the main plot) but I just love these two. Although Bree is a bit crazy with Finn at first and I mean, who wouldn’t be because she is going through a mess!
What really did it for me was how everything came together. I loved the ending! And this is Karen’s debut author. Amazing!
In short: There’s just so much in here, the plot, the characters, the time travel and sciencey stuff, the entire thing is just one great big enchilada that you will want to devour, sci fi lover or not!!! Loved it!
