"No one gets something for nothing. We all should know better."
Teenagers at Wisconsin's Nottawa High School are drawn deeper into a social networking site that promises to grant their every need . . . regardless of the consequences. Soon the site turns sinister, with simple pranks escalating to malicious crimes. The body count rises. In this chilling YA thriller, the author of the best-selling Testing trilogy examines not only the dark side of social media, but the dark side of human nature.
You know when you want to just speed read through a book because it is so slow and you don’t want to read every word? That would NOT be the case for this one! I wanted to speed read because so much is happening that I wanted to know, RIGHT NOW, what was going to happen!
I could tell, pretty much from the beginning that this story was going to be a train wreck! The writing was so appealing and the characters flew off of the page. Amazing.
There are quite a few characters in this, and they all go to teh same school and live in the same town. There’s a new social networking site that gives students in a certain school whatever they NEED if and only if they invite five more of their friends. Of course what are they going to ask for? Skateboards, iPads, phones, shoes, and concert tickets. But, soon all of the school has been invited and the only way to get what you NEED is to do a request.
YOUR NEED REQUEST HAS BEEN PROCESSED. WE WILL DO OUR BEST TO SEE THAT YOUR NEED IS MET
The requests seem innocuous, at first, but then the students start wondering just how innocuous they really are. But still, they NEED that new phone, and they do not want to be the only kid in school that has not had a request fulfilled. Especially when kids start getting skateboards, phones, and laptops.
All Kaylee wanted was for her brother to be ok. Her need cannot be fulfilled easily so while the town is getting so many things, she is waiting for her brother to be healed.
Being interested in psychology, this really resonated with me. It was like reading a thriller, and it is in the thriller genre for young adults. Every minute I was trying to access and figure out who did what. There are clues there but just when I figured one clue out, another would pop up to point in the opposite direction. Part of this may also be having so many different pov’s. I would have enjoyed this more if it had one or two pov’s and the other characters were added in. But the way it is does lead to even more suspense, just not enough time to connect with those extra characters.
I was able to figure out a small portion, which I thought was much larger, pretty early on. It did not come out how I thought though. Which makes this all the more interesting. At around 80% I was able to figure it out but by then all the clues are already starting to come together.
The only reason you will find yourself speeding through this is because once you start, you will not want to put this one down.
Incredible story telling. Fascinating characters. I loved every word!
