Brusenna thought it was finished. She defeated the Dark Witch, saving the Haven Witches from imprisonment and death. She found love and a place to belong. She was wrong. Haven is not the sanctuary it appears to be. Even love is in danger of slipping away like water through cupped hands. Some things can't be saved. A new threat merges with the old as the Witches' dark history begins to catch up with them. Only Brusenna knows the extent of the danger and how to stop it, though doing so might cost her everything. Including her life. Will Brusenna be required to make the ultimate sacrifice?
I felt like the second really picked up from the first. There was so much that I was disgruntled about in Witch Song and then I start Witch Born and viola! Answers!!
I can’t say too much without spoilers but what I can say is this:
Firstly, the characters seem a lot more advanced. I really got into Senna and could understand her motivations more. Joshen is still around and Reden is as well. Reden is definitely one of my favorite guys. He’s just so lovable. The only issue I started having was actually with myself when Senna started getting close (ish) to Cord. I really like that guy!
Mistin was also a nice revelation. I think that it’s good that Senna finally has someone that understands, and she needs Mistin just as much as Mistin needs her.
Secondly, the plot! There was still a TON going on but nothing like book one. I could tell where I was in the book and never did I feel bored. The beginning was still a tad slow but I was much more into the plot this go around! So much is answered.
The witches themselves are a huge annoyance just like in Witch Song. I mean how many times do you have to be proved wrong before you’ll start listening to someone? Even if they are an apprentice. I mean… my god! I was complaining to my hubby and he says that all newbies get treated this way. He played football in highschool and college and he would know the hazing that goes on. But that’s all in good fun! These witches are just mean!
And the final plus! I had NO clue who the culprit was. When I read it I was able to look back and say an Ahha! But prior to that moment, yeah… I was totally clueless. Which I love! Being able to figure out the opponent in two pages is boring! This took two books AND the answer had to be handed to me! Great job Amber!
All in all, really interesting fantasy. Lots of events that can be considered horrific but it’s worth reading through to the end!
