Bout of Books

Bout of Books:

Super excited!!! Bout of Books is going to be on my birthday this year! A full birthday week of reading! What could be better?!

Go and sign up on the Bout of Books blog!

For those that don’t know what Bout of Books is… here you go:

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, January 6th and runs through Sunday, January 12th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure, and the only reading competition is between you and your usual number of books read in a week. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 9.0 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. – From the Bout of Books team.

Updates

Monday

Number of books I’ve read today: 2
Total number of books I’ve read: 2
Books:

  1. Winds of Time by B. Simpson (382 pages)
  2. Witch Rising by Amber Argyle (28 pages) Review done!

Had lots of time today! Winds of Time was a little slow but Witch Rising really was a great in between read. Love short stories for marathon reading! Off to do challenges and cheer! 😀

Challenge!

1) Book Buying Spree – This was just too much fun! Except I kept thinking I really do want to get a new cookbook… Saying no to the hundreds of books that I still want was the hard part!

bob2014 challenge 12) Mad Libs Challenge!

character name –  Unmaking Hunter Kennedy, by Anne Eliot
adjective1 – An Illicit Arrangement, by Cecilia Gray
adjective2 – The White Queen, by Philipa Gregory
item – Whistling in the Graveyard by Susan Crandall
occupation – Guards, Guards by Terry Pratchett
act of violence – Kat Fight by Dina Silver
adjective3 – I Shall Wear Midnight, by Terry Pratchett
noun1 – Mortality, by Kellie Sheridan
noun2 – Whispers in Autumn by Trisha Leigh

I just read the greatest book!

This guy Hunter Kennedy ends up in the middle of an illicit conspiracy. Turns out his ancestors were pirates, and he might be the key to finding the White Graveyard. It’s a mythic artifact that disappeared centuries ago, and now a shadowy group of Guards are looking for it. No one knows what uncovering it might do, but these guys are willing to fight for it.

I won’t say anything else. But believe me, if you like Midnight stories with mortality and autumn, you have to read this one.

Tuesday

Number of books I’ve read today: Starting Witch Fall by Amber Argyle
Total number of books I’ve read: 3
Books: Witch Fall by Amber Argyle (330 pages)

Completed all of my reviews & finished Witch Fall! Fabulous reading day!

Challenges:

1) Reading Tactics

How do you fit in as much reading as possible during Bout of Books? How do you squeeze in those extra pages?

I am pretty organized with my daily schedule and during Bout of Books I pretty much make reading my number one priority, with the exception of school. I make a list of books that I think will fit, normally my upcoming reviews list and have them all downloaded to my kindle or in a pile on my desk, ready for when I need them! Plus this way if a book isn’t working for me I can easily switch to another! I talk to the hubby and tell him the dates so we’re organized ahead of time with shopping, dinners, cleaning, etc. Our time together is at night but during read a thons he knows that unless I need a break I’m going to be reading my ass off! He helps by making dinner and letting me have the time to read. 🙂

2) Cast Your Book

Whew… this one was tough for me! I chose Midnight City by J. Barton Mitchell

Holt should be pretty young but also pretty tough. I think Xavior Samuels fits this pretty well. Mia Wasikowska for Mia (totally works!) and then Ellie Fanning as Zoey.

Wednesday

Number of books I’ve read today: Finished The Appeal of Evil by Pembroke Sinclair
Total number of books I’ve read: 3
Books: Starting late but finished school work for today! Just opened The Appeal of Evil by Pembroke Sinclair. Looks good!

Challenge:

Introduce someone to your favorite genre:

My favorite is dystopian / apocalyptic. My recent favorite read was The Severed Tower by J. Barton Mitchell. It is a bit sci fi but it was so well done that I flew through both books and then proceeded to buy them on audible and make my husband listen on a long drive. For some reason I really think characters are pushed to their limits in these types of books. Someone you may not become comes out because of the dire circumstances. You can always find your true self… they’re amazing!

Thursday

Number of books I’ve read today: The Serendipitous Curse of Soloman Brandt
Total number of books I’ve read: 5
Books:

Today has been awesome! I even got some school work done but I have had an amazing time reading. All my pups are being quite! For once! Birthday festivities tonight so I know I won’t be reading this evening but I am going to start Is This Love by Sue Moorcroft. Sadly I made an entire list and then keep changing that list!

Challenges!

1) Double Date!

Ok, this sounds like so much fun! If I were to tell you to go on a double date I would say to choose these books about witches: Witch Born by Amber Argyle & The Last Witch by Debbie Dee

Witch SongThe Last Witch

2) Create a found* poem in three easy steps!

I chose the book How to Save a World from Dying by Carl Plumer

Impossible armor circled abound

wired herself of realization

Looking internal: new fact is you.

Friday

Number of books I’ve read today:
Total number of books I’ve read: 6
Notes: I stayed up super late last night to finish In Control by Crystal Serowka! I just couldn’t put it down! So today I’m hoping to start The Price of Justice but man am I tired! I’m hoping to get at least 3 read this weekend though. With chores, school, and grocery shopping that may be difficult.

Challenges:

Saturday

Number of books I’ve read today:
Total number of books I’ve read:
Books:

Notes:

Sunday
Number of books I’ve read today:
Total number of books I’ve read: 9!!
Books:

Notes:  I was able to spend quite a bit of the weekend reading my behind off! In total just this weekend I read four books and all together I read a total of NINE!

This is definitely the most I’ve read in a week. And this is with making plans with the hubby and getting things organized ahead of time to make sure I had the most time in the day and that he was prepared to have my nose stuck in a book at night. Worked out beautifully!

Whew… going to need a little reading break after that one!

Thank you to all of our hosts! Fabulous job! Loved the challenges 😀

Seven books? I’m hoping to do 5 and that’s me being overly optimistic (or so I thought…), but it is my first read-a-thon so I’m learning my way still. Happy Birthday in advance! 🙂 And good luck for next week. Now I’m off to figure out this challenges business that everyone keeps mentioning…

    • Christina

I have a lot of time so this is just me hoping that I actually get to utilize that time to read! With school and my four mutts and the hubby I’ll see if it actually happens! I already told him he’s making dinner this week 😀

Thank you so much for the bday wishes! Coffee and books and a new vacuum cleaner is what I asked for! The hubby laughed at the vacuum cleaner but hey… I already have the books and coffee!

Good luck to you as well! You’ll love the challenges! They are normally posted the day of each event. And lots of times there will be giveaways involved!

      • Annie

The challenges sounds like fun! I think a vacuum cleaner is a brilliant ‘wish’ – after all you’ll spend enough time using it that you want the right one. 🙂 My aunt asked for casserole dishes this Christmas… unfortunately she told tons of people that and now she has A LOT. lol.

        • Christina

They really are! I did a challenge two years ago and did a giveaway also. Absolutely loved it. But just playing is fun as well.

LOL! I thought about that… only tell so many people unless it’s books or book certificates! By the way, love your website!

    • Christina

LOL! Yes I am! 😉 That’s just what I’m shooting for though, we shall see if I actually hit that mark! Good luck to you as well!

  2. Laura (@xbooksmartie)

Good luck with reading a book a day! I tried that once and I love the feeling you get when you’re reading all the time and jumping from story to story so fast! It made my head spin 🙂

    • Christina

I didn’t do reviews in between one time and my head was all discombobulated with the plots. I learned to start writing notes especially if they aren’t in Kindle format where I can just highlight stuff that I love!

  3. Alicia

HAHA MY GOALS LOOK PUNY NEXT TO YOURS xD Enjoy reading and have fun! I guess my greatest wish is to finally get to take part in a twitter chat this time round. Reading-wise… I’m not holding up high expectations for myself hehe.

LET’S ALL DO THIS TOGETHER YEAH

I always aim really high. If I make it then great, if not then hopefully I still enjoyed myself. The twitter chat should be super fun! I’ve never been involved so I am going to try to get into one this week! Good luck and see you there!

  4. Laura @ the Booksmartie

Ooops, I feel really intimidated right now as I only know one of the books on your list 🙂 Anyway, I love Sara Zarr’s books and cannot wait to get my hands on Roomies! I just started Uni this fall so it totally fits ! I hope you can achieve your goals!

A few are for tours and a couple are from authors. I’m trying to get caught up with reviews after my vacations in Nov & Dec! I got Roomies off of Netgalley and I think it’ll be a perfect fit for when I need some fun stuff to read 😀

  5. Tien

Hubby thinks that I read way too much as it is. He won’t be impressed if I set everything else aside for a readathon -which is why I haven’t been participating in any (even though I REALLY WANT TO)
    🙁
I would love to just lounge around and read read read but that’s not going to happen with a 4yo around ;p
Looks like you’re having a good round so far! Good luck 🙂

I am fortunate to have a reader as a husband and when he’s not reading he’s playing games on his computer. I just tell him get out of my hair and he does it! But we also don’t have a four yo! We just have four mutts that run around creating havoc everywhere they go!

      • Tien

Ha! I have one of those mutts too though he’s getting on (his muzzle’s getting grey) so he’s a little less crazy.

Can’t wait til my son is old enough to read himself and we can have quiet reading time together -each with own book 😉

I loved that with my daughter. It was so nice! We just bought her her very own Nook for Christmas. She was dying over it!

  6. Tien

Wow, you nearly made it with your plan reads! so close! Thought that was a TON of reading.

What did you end up doing for your ‘reading-break’? enjoyed a bookish movie (ie movie based on books)?

    • Christina

LOL! Normally my breaks consist of painting while listening to audible 😀 Today I played on my blog. I am addicted… No Blog’s Anonymous for me though please!
