Set in the lush countryside of Normandy, France, this new novel of suspense featuring Lady Emily Hargreaves is filled with intrigue, romance, mysterious deaths, and madness.
Returning from her honeymoon with Colin Hargreaves and a near brush with death in Constantinople, Lady Emily convalesces at her mother-in-law's beautiful estate in Normandy. But the calm she so desperately seeks is shattered when, out riding a horse, she comes upon the body of a young woman who has been brutally murdered. The girl's wounds are identical to those inflicted on the victims of Jack the Ripper, who has wreaked havoc across the channel in London. Emily feels a connection to the young woman and is determined to bring the killer to justice.
Pursuing a trail of clues and victims to the beautiful medieval city of Rouen and a crumbling chateau in the country, Emily begins to worry about her own sanity: she hears the cries of a little girl she cannot find and discovers blue ribbons left in the child's wake. As Emily is forced to match wits with a brilliant and manipulative killer, only her courage, keen instincts and formidable will to win can help her escape becoming his next victim.

I am only sad to say that I have not gone back and read the previous books in the series. I remember this one but vaguely and I think I completely forgot that I wanted to read the rest of the series. This is one that I would love to re-read especially since I do not remember it very well.

Prior Review:

At the beginning, Lady Emily Hargreaves finds a body, dreadfully massacred, but most egregious, the woman looks much like her. She is fearful for her life but lets her scientific view of the world take over and wants to solve this murder, and other various smaller crimes in the country, to satisfy her mind. She finds herself in mortal danger more than once, but it always seems like there is more to this story than the other participants are willing to tell. Death, intrigue, mother-in-laws, can we ask for more?

I chose this book as part of my Summer Book Challenge, this particular one was — pick a bookshelf in a store or library, find the 3rd book from the left, 4th shelf down, at least 200 pages. I was quite surprised when I picked this up, lovely cover, interesting synopsis, Sherlock Holmes but for women type, set in the late 1800’s, how could I resist?

It has a very believable plot but little did I know this is actually the fifth in the series. There is much in there, what I assume at least, was about the previous books but I never felt like I missed anything. The author is gracious enough to fill in any questions you may have making this, yes part of a series, but totally readable and most importantly understandable on its own!

Characters are absolutely fantastic. The main character, Lady Emily Hargreaves is extraordinarily believable. Although I wanted to cough at certain things I realize more than 100 years in the past, women were very different but here is an outstanding woman of character and finesse. I am so in love with how she handles situations, even when she does feel that the only thing that can be done is sitting in a corner crying. Her husband is also quite remarkable, in that he constantly wants to let her have her way but not when it comes to putting herself into danger, which does happen quite often enough that he may want to lock her up in future books!

Every page was gripping, absolutely fun, uproarious good time while solving a murder. Lovely writing! This will be another series on my TO READ list! And for some reason, very reminiscent of Dracula, strong heroines, wonderful heroes, beautiful text, marvelous plot. Interesting!

Now to read book one… And Only to Deceive.
