When eighteen-year-old Judy Hudson discovers she’s a necromancer and sees first-hand the pain her powers can cause the dead, she just wants to deny who she is. The zombie plague is long over. She wants to find a more normal life, but that’s a challenge when a beautiful otherworldly man, who claims to be her guardian, saves her life.
Judy tries to set right the harm she inflicted on a spirit she raised, but new zombies attack—zombies raised from among the long-time dead. Someone else just like her is out there, and he’s not trying to set anything right. To save her own life, and protect the innocent inhabitants of the nearby town who’ve become her friends, Judy has to figure out who’s raising the dead and why. She must also learn to control the darkness inside her—a seductive darkness that promises her power beyond her wildest dreams.
What a wonderfully different book! I really enjoyed the feeling that I got while reading the first few pages. This is after a zombie apocalypse and things are getting back in order something that I don’t normally see with zombie books. But it’s the grungy feeling that I enjoyed. Finding out that you’re a necromancer after the end of a zombie apocalypse must feel like the end of the world, and at first it did for Judy.
I liked Judy’s push / pull to the dark side. I think anyone powerful would feel this. And although I think some of the characters could be fleshed out more I really enjoyed reading about them. Judy grew on me throughout the book but there were some characters that really jumped out, like Eve.
And speaking of atmosphere, the cemetery was beyond creepy and the library! Ohh… I want that library. Maybe minus the cobwebs!
Although this says New Adult it struck me as a bit younger. Judy is 18 but she sometimes acts very naive and younger than her age. It’s still a lot of fun and interesting for a fantasy. I really love Kim Cleary’s imagination and can’t wait for more.
