Shelf Control – Shadow of Night by Deborah Harkness

shelf-controlA weekly features celebrating unread books on our shelves! Pick a book you own but haven’t read, write a post about it (suggestions: include what it’s about, why you want to read it, and when you got it), and link up.

My Shelf Control picks will be books that I already own — either physical copies from my overflowing shelves, or one of the many unread titles elbowing each other out of the way on my Kindle.

So, although Bookshelf Fantasies is only counting actual books I’m also going to add in any books that I’ve received from authors and Netgalley that need to be read… so, here goes!

I read the first, A Discovery of Witches, when it was published and was so excited about Shadow of Night that I purchased it as soon as it was published. Now book three, The Book of Life, is out and I have yet to read book two!

Time may be part of the issue for this one, but really, I want to re-read book one again. I read it a while ago and I want to be able to give the books the time they deserve. I remember the plot (sort of) but not enough to jump into book two. That’s roughly 1000 pages to read with so many books and so little time!

Definitely one that I’ll get to soon though. I want to read book three!

IT BEGAN WITH A DISCOVERY OF WITCHES.

Historian Diana Bishop, descended from a line of powerful witches, and long-lived vampire Matthew Clairmont have broken the laws dividing creatures. When Diana discovered a significant alchemical manuscript in the Bodleian Library, she sparked a struggle in which she became bound to Matthew. Now the fragile coexistence of witches, daemons, vampires and humans is dangerously threatened.

Seeking safety, Diana and Matthew travel back in time to London, 1590. But they soon realize that the past may not provide a haven. Reclaiming his former identity as poet and spy for Queen Elizabeth, the vampire falls back in with a group of radicals known as the School of Night. Many are unruly daemons, the creative minds of the age, including playwright Christopher Marlowe and mathematician Thomas Harriot.

Together Matthew and Diana scour Tudor London for the elusive manuscript Ashmole 782, and search for the witch who will teach Diana how to control her remarkable powers…
